A great match – but who keeps the conversation going?

Hands holding a phone showing a text chat with short replies

I got a comment the other day that I haven't quite been able to let go of.

You can match really well with someone. Same values, similar personality, looking for the same thing. And still there's no guarantee the conversation will flow.

The interview nobody asked for

I've been there many times. I ask questions, I'm curious and I genuinely want to get to know the person on the other side. What I get back are short answers. “Good.” “Mostly work.” “Haha yeah.” After a while it feels less like a date and more like a job interview where I'm both the recruiter and the one selling the mood.

Honestly, it's exhausting. You can only carry a conversation alone for so long before you start wondering why you're doing it.

Curiosity isn't a bonus. It's the fuel.

What makes the difference

For me, the back-and-forth matters most of all. That both of you ask. That both of you want to know more. That someone picks up a thread I mentioned in passing and says: “Wait, tell me more about that.” That's when it starts to feel like two people meeting, not two profiles.

When it's missing, I notice my interest fading pretty quickly. Not because the person is boring, but because I never get the chance to find out whether they're something else.

A comment that became a feature

The fun part is that this comment led to something right away. On the Aivelyn website you can now get conversation topics based on your two profiles, and it's coming to the app soon.

If you both value spontaneity, for example, the suggestion might be: “You both value spontaneity – what does spontaneity look like in your everyday life?” It's a question that invites more than one word, and it's about something you already share.

Of course it doesn't solve everything. It still takes two people to have a good conversation. But maybe it can help you get past the eternal “what's up?” and into something that's actually fun to answer.

How important is it to you that the person you're talking to is curious and asks questions back?

1 = Not very important5 = Super important
