Chemistry and compatibility: what is the difference when dating?

The conversation flows and you do not want the evening to end. Or the person seems to suit you in many ways, but you are not yet sure whether you want to meet again. When talking about dating, we often use the words chemistry and compatibility. One useful distinction is to let chemistry describe the attraction you experience and compatibility describe how your needs, priorities and lives might work together.

What do we mean by chemistry?

Chemistry can mean attraction, playfulness, a shared laugh or the feeling of wanting to get closer.

You do not need to explain the feeling exactly. But it does not tell you everything about what you want or how you treat each other over time.

What do we mean by compatibility?

Here, compatibility concerns questions such as: Are we heading in similar directions? Is there room for both our needs? Can we handle our differences?

For example, you may share a sense of humour but have different wishes about children. Or have different interests but enjoy the same balance between time together and time alone.

Comparing needs therefore involves more than counting shared interests.

Questions to help you explore both

After meeting, you could consider:

  • Am I curious about this person and interested in meeting again?
  • Could I express what I thought and wanted?
  • Did we show interest in each other?
  • What do I know about what the other person is looking for?
  • Is there something important where we seem to want different things?
  • What do I need to learn more about before reaching a conclusion?

Give yourself room to reflect

A first date provides limited information. If you feel comfortable and curious, you can choose to meet again. At the same time, you do not need to persuade yourself if you do not want to.

What can a match score tell you?

In Aivelyn, matching provides a starting point based on profile answers and priorities. The explanation can highlight areas to talk about further.

A high score does not tell you that you should fall in love. Nor can it guarantee that the person will meet your expectations in person. Read the explanation, ask questions and give your own experiences room.

Let curiosity sit alongside your needs

You can long for attraction while also wanting respect, mutual interest and an everyday life that works. As you get to know someone, there is room to explore all of that, one conversation at a time.

Stay curious.
