Serious dating – talk about intentions and shared goals

If you want a relationship, it helps to talk about what that means to you. Do you want the same things, and do everyday actions reflect what you say? This guide focuses on intentions, expectations and conversations while dating. Separate guides help you find social settings or compare apps.

Short answer

Serious dating is less about finding more people and more about making your intention understandable. Describe concretely what you want, read profiles for what someone says about their everyday life and relationships, and choose a service based on whether you want to sort through many profiles yourself or get fewer, explained suggestions.

What "serious" actually means

Serious does not mean the same thing to everyone. For one person it means a relationship within a year, for another not dating several people at once, for a third being able to talk about children without it getting awkward.

Before writing a profile, it is worth naming your own version: what do you want six months from now, what do you not want at all, and what are you open to changing your mind about?

Say it early - as a description, not a demand

Writing "looking for something serious" says less than an example. Try something concrete instead: "I want to find someone to build an everyday life with, and I prefer dating one person at a time".

A description invites people who want the same thing and filters out those who do not, without sounding like an ultimatum. You do not owe anyone your whole life plan in a first message.

How to read a profile when you want more than looks

Look for what can be talked about further: everyday life, pace, how the person describes their relationships, whether they say what they are looking for.

  • Do they write about what they want, or only about what they like?
  • Is there any sign of how they behave when something is difficult?
  • Can you ask a follow-up question that is not an interview question?
  • Are distance, life situation and timeframe workable for you?

Talk about expectations without promising too much

After a few meetings, you could ask: “What do you hope dating will lead to?” and “How do you feel about continuing to see each other?”. Listen without filling in the answer you hope to hear. You may need different amounts of time.

If you want different things, you can set a boundary: “I am looking for a relationship, so I do not want to continue on these terms.” You do not need to persuade someone to want the same thing. Shared goals also need to show in how you treat each other.

Write your own starting point

Complete three sentences privately. Then choose what you want to share in your profile or next conversation.

  • I hope to find someone to …
  • For dating to feel good, I need …
  • One question I want to ask before we go further is …
