Tired of swiping? How to date more thoughtfully

You open the app, look at a few profiles and close it again. Perhaps you have lots of conversations that never become a meeting. Perhaps searching feels like another task. If you want to change how you date, start by considering which part takes the most energy. Is it the number of profiles, unclear intentions or time in front of a screen?

Short answer

Dating without swiping means that swiping is not at the centre of the experience. You might meet someone through friends, activities, personal introductions or a service that suggests matches. A smaller selection does not, by itself, tell you how well those people suit you.

What does dating without swiping mean?

Dating without swiping means that swiping is not at the centre of the experience. You might meet someone through friends, activities, personal introductions or a service that suggests matches.

These approaches differ. A smaller selection does not, by itself, tell you how well those people suit you. It is worth understanding how the selection is made.

Four questions before choosing a service

  • What are suggestions based on? Photos, preferences, profile answers or a personal conversation? Can the service explain why someone is suggested?
  • Are there people to meet? Check where the service is active and what happens if a relevant match is not available.
  • What can you control? You should be able to understand how to change preferences, decline contact and delete your account.
  • What does it cost? Read what is included, when payment begins and how to end the service.

Decide where you want to put your energy

You could set aside time for dating instead of opening the app out of habit. Or choose to keep fewer conversations going if that helps you be more present.

When a conversation feels good, you could suggest something simple:

“I enjoy talking with you. Would you like to continue over a coffee sometime?”

You do not need to rush into a meeting or keep writing out of politeness when you are not interested.

How Aivelyn approaches matching

Aivelyn Matchmaker compares profile answers and takes into account how you prioritise different areas. The explanation behind a suggestion gives you something to explore together.

A match score cannot tell you how meeting will feel or how a relationship will develop. The availability of suggestions also depends on which relevant profiles are there.

Your own starting point

Finish this sentence: “I want to spend less energy on … and more energy on …”

Let your answer help you choose your next step.

Your checklist before you start

Choose three things you want a clear answer to. This is a basis for your decision, not a compatibility test.

  1. How is a match suggestion explained?
  2. Are there relevant profiles where I live?
  3. What am I paying for, and when does a fee start?
  4. What can I change, decline and delete?
  5. What do I want to learn at a first meeting?
